Within April 2-8, 2018, three articles that generate hate speech were selected. You can find these articles that contain hate speech against Syrians, Jews and Greeks as well as the analyses written about them below.1

Vatan, April 6, 2018

In the article published in Vatan with the title “Syrian ransom mob caught on action”, national identity of the perpetrators is highlighted though it is not directly related to the incidents. The article associates Syrian identity with crime and reinforces negative opinions about this identity.

Yeni Akit, April 6, 2018

The article published in Yeni Akit with the title “GREEKS CROSSED THE LİNE WE WİLL CRUSH TURKS” covers the statements of Greek Minister of Defense by associating them with Greek identity as a whole. The newspaper regenerates a historical discourse of enmity and incites enmity between peoples with remarks like the following: “Tactless Greek who forgot that we chased his ancestors to the sea in 1922” and “Greeks, tools of the West, continue to provoke Turkey”.

Milli Gazete, April 3, 2018

In the article published in Milli Gazete with the title “Intruder Jews raided al-Aqsa again”, all Jews are pointed as the perpetrators of the incident in questions and Jewish identity is labeled as “intruder”. Thus, the article reinforces negative opinions about Jewish identity and the perception of enmity is strengthened. 

 

1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
