Within March 5-11, 2018, three articles that generate hate speech were selected. You can find these articles that contain hate speech against Syrians, Jews and Buddhists as well as the analyses written about them below.1
1.The article, which was published in Yeni Söz with the title “Buddhist genocide rises in Sri Lanka now” on the front page and with the title “Buddhists kill Muslims in Sri Lanka” inside, portrays Buddhists as enemies by holding the entire Buddhist identity responsible for the assaults and violence through titles and the expression “Buddhist terrorist” that is repeated many times.

2.The article published in Milli Gazete with the title “Jewish terrorists attack Palestinians” targets Jews by associating the alleged attack with Jewish identity and escalates existing prejudices.

3.In the article published in Adıyaman Yeniyol with the title “Two Syrians propagating terrorism arrested”, the national identity of the suspects is highlighted though it is not directly related to the incident. The article incites a negative perception of Syrians by associating them with “terrorism”.

1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
