Within February 26 - March 4, 2018, four articles that generate hate speech were selected. You can find these articles that contain hate speech against Armenians, Syrians, non-Muslims, Serbians and Buddhists as well as the analyses written about them below.1

Milli Gazete, March 2, 2018

Burhan Bozgeyik, in his column titled “Humanity is dead, nobody cares!”, labels all Serbians and Buddhists as enemies by associating them with violence and massacre as we see in the following remarks: “Starting from 1992, Muslims in Bosnia had been subjected to a terrible persecution. Serbians soaked those lands with Muslim blood. They raped tens of thousands of women”, “Tens of thousands of Muslims were killed by Buddhists in Arakan”.

Kocaeli Demokrat, March 1, 2018

In the article published in Kocaeli Demokrat with the titled “Syrian hodja turns out to be fraud” on the front page and with the title “Fake hodja caught” inside, national identity of the suspect is highlighted though it is not directly related to the incident. The article creates a negative perception of Syrians by associating them with crime.

Yeni Söz, February 28, 2018

The article published in Yeni Söz newspaper with the title “Giaour protected its teddy bear” on the front page and with the title “Terrorist Saleh Muslim released” inside consolidates the enmity against non-Muslims with the word giaour, which is used as an expression of hatred and defamation for non-Muslim identities in Turkey.

Genç Gazete, February 27, 2018

In the article published in Genç Gazete with the title “Armenian atrocity won’t be forgotten”, features the statements of Selahattin Dumanlar, spokesperson of İnegöl Ertuğrul Gazi Association, that accuses all Armenians as “Armenian atrocity”. Thus, Armenian identity is associated with violence and enmity between peoples is incited.

 

1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
