Within February 12-18, 2018, four articles that generate hate speech were selected. You can find these articles that contain hate speech against LGBTIs, the British, Jews and non-Muslims as well as the analyses written about them below.1

Yeni Akit, February 16, 2018

In the article published in Yeni Akit with the title “D-Smart encourages perversion”, LGBTIs are repeatedly labeled as “pervert” because of their sexual orientation and gender identity. The newspaper incites hatred against LGBTIs by portraying them as a threat against society.

 

Yeni Söz, February 16, 2018

The article published in Yeni Söz with the title “Exploitation, plunder, rape” features remarks like “The British did what they always do”, “fake relief agency of the British”, “inappropriate according to the British.” In this way, all British people are held responsible for the incidents covered in the article and they are associated with crime. Also, the prejudices against Westerners are also reinforced with the remark “No need for any help from Westerners.”

Yeni Konya, February 14, 2018

In the article published in Yeni Konya with the title “Beware the Jewish plot!”, Jews are targeted and existing prejudices against them are escalated by associating the claim in question directly with the Jewish identity.

Yeni Akit, February 12, 2018

The article published in Yeni Akit with the title “That’s the difference between us and the giaours” covers the claims that the US sent arms to Syria by forming a duality of “us vs. them”. By using the word “giaour” in the title, the newspaper reinforces the perception of enmity concerning non-Muslims, since that word is used as an expression of hatred and defamation against non-Muslims in Turkey.

 

1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
