1.

Milliyet, February 11, 2018

In the article published in Milliyet with the title “A Syrian citizen under custody”, the national identity of the suspect is highlighted though it is not directly related to the incident. The article creates a negative perception of Syrians by associating them with crime.

2.

Yeni Akit, February 11, 2018

In the article published in Yeni Akit with the title “Homosexual perversion spreads to TV shows”, LGBTIs are associated with provocation and repeatedly labeled as “pervert” because of their sexual orientations and gender identities as we see in the following sentences: “It turned out that LGBT perverts have been using TV shows and movies as a major propaganda tool for spreading and legitimizing their immorality”, “LGBT perverts, who try to impose their immorality and perversion on our society and don’t hesitate to initiate all kinds of provocative activities, are carrying out a huge propaganda through TV shows and cinema”. Thus, the newspaper marks LGBTIs as a threat to society.

3.

Yeniçağ, February 9, 2018

Yeniçağ newspaper, in the article titled “They teach Armenians a lesson”, generates war discourse while covering military activity along Azerbaijani-Armenian border and targets Armenians in the title by presenting them as a party to the incident. Thus, perception of enmity between peoples is created.

4.

Bursa'da Meydan, February 5, 2018

The article published in Bursa’da Meydan with the title “Giaour torment to Cenk Tosun” distorts the statements of the football coach about his player Cenk Tosun and uses the word “giaour” which is used as an expression of hatred and defamation for non-Muslim identities in Turkey. Thus, non-Muslims are symbolized as a “threat” or “enemy”.
