Within January 1-7, 2018, four articles that generate hate speech were selected. You can find these articles that contain hate speech against Greeks, Christians, Jews and Syrians as well as the analyses written about them below.1

Ortadoğu, January 7, 2018

The article published in Ortadoğu newspaper with the title "GREEKS ARE PROVOKING" cover the tension caused by the announcement that Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will visit the Island Kalimnos. In the article, the problem between two states is featured in the title in a way to accuse all Greeks; thus enmity against Greeks is escalated.

Diriliş Postası, January 4, 2018

N. Mümine Bucak, in her column titled “Tyrants of Middle East will be doomed”, writes: “In the fortified Middle East where Christian and Jewish terrorism prevails, the voice of tyrants thunder.” In this way, she accuses all Christians and Jews, and associates them with “terrorism”, escalating the enmity against them.

Yeni Konya, January 2, 2018

In the article published in Yeni Konya newspaper with the title “Jews detained 6,742 Palestinians in 2017”, Israeli soldiers’ detaining Palestinians is featured in the title by holding Jewish identity responsible for what happened. Thus, the newspaper escalates prejudice and enmity against Jews.

Çukurova Barış, January 2, 2018

In the article published in Çukurova Barış newspaper titled “Syrian historical artifact smugglers caught in action”, all Syrians are associated with crime over a singular incident. The article generates a negative perception of Syrians and labels them as an element of threat.

 

1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
