Within December 25-31, 2017, three news articles that generate hate speech were selected. You can find these articles that contain hate speech against Greeks, Iraqis and Jews as well as the analyses written about them below.1

Yeni Asır, December 28, 2017

The article that was published in the newspaper Yeni Asır with the title “Greeks’ attempt to lynch Turks” brings all Greeks under suspicion through generalizing statements. The article fuels Turkish-Greek hostility and reinforces enmity towards the Greeks.

 

2.

Eskişehir Son Haber, December 26, 2017

The article that was published in the newspaper Eskişehir Son Haber with the title “Iraqi pervert was arrested” brings the national identity of the suspect to the forefront although it is not directly linked to the event. The article associates Iraqis with crime and creates a negative perception towards them.

Yeni Akit, December 25, 2017

The article published by the newspaper Yeni Akit with the title “Bandit Jews rioted and Palestinians chased them off” conveys the event where a group of settlers cut olive trees belonging to Palestinians by attributing it to all Jews. The title that was chosen and the statement “Palestinians who heard about the event interfered and chased off the Jews who are perverts and thieves.” fuel the existing prejudice and enmity towards the Jews.

Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
