Within October 23-29, 2017, three news articles that generate hate speech were selected from the print media. You can find these articles that generate hate speech against Buddhists, Syrians and Christians as well as the analyses written about them below.1

Yeni Akit, October 27, 2017

The article that was published in the newspaper Yeni Akit titled “CRUSADERS DO NOT HAVE ANY RESPECT FOR BELIEFS” attributes the responsibility of an isolated event to the entire Christian identity with the statement “Christian Western world attacks the sacred values of Muslims and it almost makes an invitation to new Charlie Hebdo events.” Therefore, Christians are shown as a threat against Islam and the readers are incited against them.

Posta, October 26, 2017

The news article that was published in the newspaper Posta titled “Syrian poison gang” associates Syrians with crime through the emphasis made on the national identity of the suspects within the title and fuels existing prejudices against Syrians in the perception of the readers.

Milli Gazete, October 23, 2017

The article that was published in the newspaper Milli Gazete titled "THE HATRED OF BUDDHISTS DOES NOT SEEM TO COME TO AN END", a protest made by a right extremist group is covered within the title of the news article in a manner to bring all Buddhists under suspicion. Therefore, the newspaper enmitizes Buddhists by attributing the responsibility of the attacks and acts of violence concerned to an entire identity.

Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
