Within July 31 - August 6, 2017, four news articles that generate hate speech were selected from the print media.  You can find these articles that generate hate speech against Rûms, Jews, Christians and Armenians as well as the analyses written about them below.1

Diriliş Postası, August 5, 2017

In the news article titled "The dream of ‘Great Armenia’ of the  Armenian occupants reappeared!" published by the newspaper Diriliş Postası, the entire Armenian identity is brought under suspicion with statements such as “That the Imperialist West is preparing to attack Turkey via PKK, their subcontractor organization, tantalized Armenian occupants.” Armenians are thus presented as a threat to Turkey and the already existing prejudice towards them is fueled.

Konya Takip, August 3, 2017

In the news article titled “Children heard it!” published by the newspaper Konya Takip, Jews and Christians are marked as a threat and enmitized with statements such as “Domestic TV series which serve as a tool for Jews and Christians through subliminal messages are nowadays making propaganda for terrorist organizations” and “The new hit man of TV series, which are used by Jews and Christians for propaganda purposes, seems to be FETÖ terrorist organization”.

Yeni Söz, August 2, 2017

In the news article titled “Jews attacked, and Muslims resisted” published in the newspaper Yeni Söz, an antagonism of ‘we and they’ is established between Jews and Muslims. The whole Jewish identity is brought under suspicion and associated with violence with the statement “Terrorist Jews go on looking for trouble” that is above the title. The newspaper thus enmitizes Jews and incites the readers against them.

Milli Gazete, July 31, 2017

In the news article titled “Rûms against Turks” published by the newspaper Milli Gazete, questions asked in a survey conducted in Southern Cyprus concerning giving a share to Turkish Cypriots from the revenue to be obtained from natural gas are addressed. The newspaper incites the readers against Greek Cypriots and fuels enmity between both nations with statements within the title and contents of the article such as “82% of Rûms replied "No”. Rûms defend that the Turks have no right in the oil of the island!”.

 

1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
