Within 4-10 September 2017, four news articles that generate hate speech were selected. You can find these articles that generate hate speech against Buddhists, Germans, Jews and Syrians as well as the analyses written about them below.1

Yurt Gazetesi, September 7, 2017

In the news article published in the newspaper Yurt with the title “Syrian suicide bomber killed in Mersin” on the first page and with the subheading “SUICIDE BOMBER TURNED OUT TO BE A SYRIAN” on the inner page, all Syrians are brought under suspicion and associated with violence through the emphasis made on the national identity of the suspect. The newspaper thus fuels the already existing discrimination and hate towards Syrians in the society.

Milli Gazete, September 6, 2017

Milli Gazete, in the news article titled “Jewish seizure CONTINUES”, reports evacuation of the house of a Palestinian family made by an Israeli policeman in a manner to bring all Jews under suspicion. The newspaper thus fuels the already existing prejudice and hate towards Jews.

Yeni Akit, September 5, 2017

In the news article titled “INSOLENT GERMANS” published by Yeni Akit, prejudices against the German identity are fueled and Germans are insulted  via both the title and the statement “THEY AGREED ON ENMITY AGAINST TURKEY BEFORE THE ELECTIONS” above the title. The newspaper thus reinforces negative feelings towards Germans and incites the readers against them.

Bursa Hayat, September 4, 2017

Bilal Kayaaltı, in his column titled “Buddhists the Murderers and the West Applauding the Massacre”, with statements such as  “About 150 thousand Muslims are desperately trying with bare feet to seek refuge in Bangladesh to save themselves from the attacks of Buddhist murderers. The innocent people of Arakan are killed bloodthirstily just because they are Muslims”, associates Buddhists with violence many times and designates them as an “element of threat” against Muslims. The author also enmitizes Jews and Christians and incites the readers against them with the statement “Buddhists, Jews or Christians consistently kill Muslims!”

 

1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
