Within 21-27 August 2017, three news articles that generate hate speech were selected. You can find these articles that generate hate speech against Syrians, Armenians and Jews as well as the analyses written about them below.1

Yeni Söz, August 27, 2017

In the news article titled “Greek people: We became bankrupt due to Zionists and Jews” published in the newspaper Yeni Söz, a negative generalization is made and the entire Jewish identity is brought under suspicion with a statement such as “It was told that after Hungary, Greek people also blame Zionists and Jews for the collapse of their country's economy". The newspaper thus fuels the already existing prejudice and hate towards Jews in the society.

Yeni Birlik, 25 Ağustos 2017

In the article titled “Armenian terror, Abdülhamid II and his unsuccessful policies against terrorism: A comparison with the present situation” written by Dündar Murat Demiröz, with the statement “Armenian terror” mentioned in the title, the whole Armenian identity is brought under suspicion and associated with violence, and enmity between peoples is fueled.

 

3.

Yurt, August 22, 2017

The article titled “Abuse by Syrians caused a chaos”, which was published in the newspaper Yurt, brings all Syrians under suspicion and incites the readers with the emphasis made on the Syrian identity based on an isolated event. Syrians are thus shown as a source of ‘tension' and the already existing prejudice and hate towards them are fueled.

 

1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
