Within July 17-23, 2017, four news articles that generate hate speech were selected from the print media. You can find these articles that generate hate speech against Arabs, Jews, non-Muslims and Syrians as well as the analyses written about them below.1

1.

Kırıkkale Pusula, July 22, 2017

In the news article titled "There was only this left that they haven’t done!" published in the newspaper Kırıkkale Pusula, Syrian refugees are associated with crime by emphasizing the national identity of the individual many times in the upper title “A SYRIAN REFUGEE WAS CAUGHT IN THE ACT WHILE ENGAGING IN PIRATE TAXI BUSINESS” as well as throughout the entire article. The already existing prejudices towards them and the discrimination they are exposed to are thus fueled.

2.

Yeni Akit, July 21, 2017

Ali İhsan Karahasanoğlu fuels enmity towards non-Muslim identities in his column titled “Money from the giaour, swearing from domestic guys!" with the word ‘giaour’ that is used as an expression of hate and humiliation for these identities in Turkey both in the title of the column and also in the statements within the column such as "You would accept the facts: 'Our ancestors did not say 'No coat from a bear, no friend from a giaour' for nothing!”

3.

Yeni Konya, July 19, 2017

In the news article titled “Jews destroyed 3 houses belonging to Palestinians” published in the newspaper Yeni Konya, the responsibility for a Palestinian having been injured as a result of the gunfire opened by Israeli soldiers is attributed to all Jews. The newspaper thus fuels the already existing prejudice and hate towards Jews.

4.

Sözcü, July 18, 2017

Yılmaz Özdil, in his column titled "Kebab restaurant raid by Fatih Terim", makes negative generalizations about Arabs and insults them with statements such as "You give five liras or ten liras to illegal parking assistants... Some Istanbulites who want to be like uncouth Arabs give 200 liras to the person who take their Porsches from Hacımemiş, so the illegal parking assistant is off balance, he is psychologically confused (...)". He thus causes the prejudice against Arabs to be reinforced and antagonism against Arabs to be fueled.
