Within June 19-25, 2017, four news articles that generate hate speech were selected from the print media. You can find these articles that generate hate speech against LGBTIs, who are targeted because of the Pride Week, as well as the analyses written about them below.1


1.

Kilis'in Sesi, June 23, 2017

The newspaper Kilis’in Sesi positions LGBTIs as a ‘threat’ to the society because of their gender identities and sexual orientations in the news article titled “Global deviance is a threat to the Turkish family structure”. LGBTIs are coded as "deviant” several times in the article and they are humiliated with expressions such as “LGBTI virus” and forms of existence other than heteronormative patterns are otherized. As in the statements "France, the country which exploited Algeria and plundered Libya, is also among the leading supporters of LGBTI”, LGBTIs are mentioned together with formations marked as a ‘source of worry’ in a repeated manner. The newspaper causes normalization and spreading of the discrimination and violence that target LGBTIs.

Yeni Akit, June 21, 2017

In the news article published by the newspaper Yeni Akit with the title “Stop this deviance!” on the first page and “Ban this DEVIANT FILM!” on the inner page, LGBTIs are insulted and targeted because of their sexual orientations and gender identities, and are coded as a 'threat' to the society and the already existing discrimination is thus fueled with statements such as "While the so-called pride march to be organized by the formation of homosexuals called LGBTI on the 1st day of Ramadan Fest is ongoing, it has been found out that the movie called 'Sweet Things (Tatlı Şeyler)', which is to be released on June 23, also praises homosexual deviance” and “The movie which tells so-called funny events with two deviant fashion designers is full of scenes that target Turkish moral structure”.

Yeni Akit, June 20, 2017

LGBTIs are insulted and humiliated several times with expressions such as ‘deviant’ and ‘immoral’ in the news article titled “DEVIANTS HAVE GONE MAD” published by the newspaper Yeni Akit. The violence that often targets LGBTIs is legitimized and fueled with the statement “DO NOT ALLOW THIS IMMORAL MARCH” that is given in the visual of the news article. Also in the subheadings “IMMORALITY RATHER THAN FREEDOM”, “DEVIANCE IS NO HUMAN RİGHT” and “A DISGUSTING MARCH”, discourses are popularized which lead to othering of LGBTIs in the society due to their sexual orientations and gender identities, accuse LGBTIs of ‘provocation’ and provoke the readers.

Milli Gazete, June 19, 2017

The news article titled “A BIG MISTAKE HAS BEEN CORRECTED” published by the newspaper Milli Gazete addresses illumination of July 15 Martyrs’ Bridge with the colors of the rainbow, the symbol of the LGBTI movement. LGBTIs are insulted with the expression ‘deviant’ and the prejudices and discrimination towards them are fueled with the statement “ The bridge was illuminated with the colors that are symbolically used by deviants from LGBTI when the blood of our beloved martyrs who gave their lives in the coup attempt of July 15 has not yet been dried.”


1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
