The grantees which will be supported by Hrant Dink Foundation Empowering CSO’s Grant Program 2019-2021 have been announced.
The grant program aims to support the empowerment of human rights and democracy in Turkey, the protection of rights and freedoms and promotion of conviviality among different ethnic, social and political groups through mutual understanding, dialogue and building of trust.
In total 148 organizations from 29 cities, working in the fields of human rights, children, youth, minority rights, disabled rights, ecology and urban studies, migration and refugee rights, cultural studies, empowering civil society, gender and women’s rights, have applied to the grant program and as a result of the evaluation of the independent selection committee, 1.199.617,17 Euro grant will be awarded to 15 projects from Ankara, Bitlis, Diyarbakır, Hakkari, İstanbul, İzmir and Kars.

'What Our Jewish Past Taught Us' In this project; a documentary, produced out of documents, information, films and photographs to be gathered from the Jews of Istanbul and Turkey during one-on-one interviews, followed by an exhibition will be organised. A book will be published following all of the studies. The Project aims to shed some light on the past for future generations about being a Jew in Turkey of the era as well as the history of Jewish settlements through live-witness testimonies. |

'Project: Women Empowered Through Theatre'
In this project; theatre, writing and body consciousness workshops will be delivered for women living in Bitlis. The play that will be put on stage after a year-long training will seek to raise awareness among the viewers by drawing their attention to the problems of the local women. |

'Diyarbakır/Sur: A Journey of Memory”
The project aims to transfer the cultural heritage lost in the aftermath of the conflict and urban transformation in Diyarbakır’s Sur district to future generations, to offer a contribution to the development of an urban identity and urban rights. Activities in this framework include human rights workshops, spatial memory studies, memory walks, oral history studies, photography works, seminars, workshops and an online exhibition dedicated to spatial memory studies, revitalising the collective memory together with the emigrants, urban dwellers, civil society activists and local governments, recording and keeping the memory active. |

'Production of Efficient Short Films and Public Spots to Tackle Discrimination Against Refugees'
In this project; 50-hour awareness and capacity-building workshops covering refugees’ access to rights and services in Turkey, related challenges, tackling prejudice/discrimination/hate speech against refugees will be organised and, additionally scenario-drafting, filming and fiction workshops will be held. Videos and public spots will be developed by the end of the said workshops. The project seeks to contribute to the fight against the growing discrimination, hate speech and hate crimes against refugees and migrants living in Turkey, a positive evolution in the perception of the local people and the media towards refugees, and harmonious coexistence of the refugee community and the local community. |

'Strengthening Youth Organisations for Rights-Based and Inclusive Youth Studies' The project aims to help empower the youth civil society field through training and workshops, so that youth associations and youth workers in Turkey can undertake activities in the framework of human rights, based on youth rights and in support of the struggle against discrimination, and establish a network of youth associations. |

'Susma Platform: Stronger Voices Against Censorship and Self-Censor' Under this project; Punto 24 aims to archive examples, methods, legal proceedings of and struggles against restrictions on the freedom of speech such as censorships, bans and criminal prosecutions found in cultural, art and media spheres on the digital platform: “http://susma24.com/” on a daily basis. Project activities will also include organising workshops and interviews in various cities depending on the needs of the artists, journalists, lawyers and civil society entities that participate in the Susma Platform, following up prosecutions and strengthening the legal capacity against censorship, undertaking advocacy activities in Turkey and at international level, and opening up alternative spaces for censored works. |

'Strengthening Legal Support Mechanisms for the LGBTİ+ in Turkey' The project seeks to develop support mechanisms to prosecute rights violations faced by the LGBTİ+ and to ensure their effective defence. Different activities will be organised to enable lawyers in particular to learn and share experiences about LGBTİ+ rights and frequently occurring rights violations, national and international legal mechanisms available to use in the face of such violations, interview and communications techniques with LGBTİ+-awareness. The project aims to help prevent discrimination to which the LGBTİ+ are also exposed in courts and ensure more effective representation for them through beginner and advanced-level attorney training. |

'Informing Syrian Migrant Workers About Occupational Diseases' The project seeks to share and disseminate information both with Turkish and Syrian workers as to “what working conditions that respect an individual’s health, safety and honour consist of”. Project will have activities to increase the knowledge of the concept of “occupational disease” so as to help reduce the likelihood of workers’ getting occupational diseases and disseminate information about their legal rights if they do. With this objective in mind, booklets and videos will be developed, describing occupational diseases in a simple and easy-to-understand manner. The website www.meslekhastaligi.org, which is accessible to Turkish workers, will be translated so as to make it accessible also for Syrian workers. |

'Supporting the Use of Grievance Mechanisms to Prevent Discrimination' The project aims to bring judicial specialists, victims of rights violations and disadvantaged groups together with rights-based civil society organisations operating in the field of discrimination in an effort to support use of national protection and judicial mechanisms as effective instruments to build capacity, carry out monitoring and reporting, implement legal support activities and the ban on discrimination as well as to prevent discrimination. Project activities include organisation of a Needs Analysis Meeting and Judicial Literacy Training in Istanbul with representatives of CSOs as well as delivering Lawyer Training for lawyers in Edirne, Hatay and Mardin. The goal is to create opportunities for victims and judicial specialists to work together by developing a network of CSOs operating in this field and by delivering legal counselling to victims about claims of discrimination or hate crime as well as training to judicial specialists on international discrimination law and case reporting as per international standards. |

'Kars: From A Shared Past Towards Coexistence in the City of All of Us' The project seeks to reveal cultural heritage of the province of Kars and the surrounding area. Project activities include development of an urban history and culture guide, development of the book; “Geçmişten Geleceğe Uzanan Köprü” through research of biographies of authors, poets, artists, politicians, academics of various ethnic and religious backgrounds who were raised in Kars, establishment of a “Living Museum and Library” and organisation of an international symposium. |

'Project: Monitoring and Reporting Disability Rights'
The project will monitor issues of Independent Living and Inclusion in the Society, Habilitation and Rehabilitation, Sufficient Living Standards and Social Protection while undertaking a new monitoring activity for physical, sexual violence, abuse and ill-treatment of individuals with disabilities. The project plans to develop a publication at the end of the monitoring activity, later to be distributed to public institutions, universities and NGOs. The project also seeks to influence policy-making processes by submitting the reports based on the publication to ministries, political parties, and public institutions servicing people with disabilities. |

The project aims to emphasise on the importance of women’s labour and production practices in preventing the climate and biodiversity crises in Anatolia, create common ground to tackle these issues by building solidarity among women, and to support their economic activities. 'Strengthening Social Control in Preventing Torture and Gross Serious Human Rights Violations'
The project seeks to help prevent torture and and gross violations of human rights in particular. Project activities will include awareness-raising efforts directly aimed at the public opinion, digital communication campaigns and memory works about rights violations, development of an online database containing information needed to tackle gross and serious human rights violations, undertaking a mentorship programme for young human rights advocates and a symposium on Social Trauma. |

The project seeks to help working life to adopt a structure where human rights and individual freedoms are respected in the context of gender equality and sexual orientation. Main objectives of the project comprise reorganising employment processes by emphasizing gender diversity and pluralism, creating a work environment respecting individual freedoms, developing sensitivity and raising awareness about discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation among HR supervisors who manage employment and post-employment processes. |

'Women and Children Will Change the World'
In this project; activities will be undertaken to identify the status and needs of women living in Yüksekova, to ensure awareness about gender-based violence, to support women in changing their social statuses. The project will also undertake cooperation that draws attention to formal education of curriculum that exhibits sexist tendencies, contributes to development of alternative education models, and to awareness-raising about gender-based violence in the district, household visits, visits to women’s organisations in Diyarbakır and Van, sharing of experiences, neighbourhood meetings, common play groups as well as holding 2 conferences with gender-based violence theme. |
