In the scope of 35th Foundations Week organized by the General Directorate of Foundations, "Foundations Established by Women", held between 07 and 12 May 2018, Hrant Dink Foundation and Kalfayan Orphanage Foundation present a panel "Sister Srpouhi Kalfayan's 152 Year's Foundation".

The Foundation established by Sister Srpouhi Kalfayan in 1866, became an important institution for the education of orphan girls. Sistar Kalfayan was born in Kartal in 1822 and was ordained as a nun in the age of 18. During the 1865 Cholera epidemic, as many children are orphaned, Sister Kalfayan uses her house in Hasköy to teach them handcrafts. With the support of the Armenian community, she establishes the Kalfayan Orphanage in 1866. With the increasing number of the orphans, the Orphanage moves to a new building in Halıcıoğlu. Srpouhi Kalfayan devotes her whole life to the poor and orphan children’s education, passes away in 1889 and bequeaths the nuns to continue the work of the orphanage. With a legacy of more than 150 years, the institution continues to be both home and school to many girls from its current location in Üsküdar. In the panel, Sister Kalfayan’s life, her experience as a woman of establishing an orphanage foundation, the events of the 150 years will be discussed with the use of historic sources, memoires and photographs.
