In the four-month period covering January-February-March-April 2016, 1084 columns and news articles and 1430 hate speech items targeting national, ethnic and religious groups had been found.

In this period, print media focused on issues such as the declaration of “Academics for Peace” (January 11), suicide attacks in Sultanahmet (January 12) and Taksim (March 19), anniversary of Khojaly Massacre (February 26), International Women’s Day on March 8, “Readmission Agreement” with the EU, clashes between Azerbaijan and Armenia along Karabakh border (April 2-5), April 24 Armenian Genocide Commemoration Day, developments concerning 10 October 2015 Ankara Massacre, airstrikes by Russia in Syria and Syrian refugees who escaped from the civil war in their country and took shelter in Turkey.

When a distribution per targeted groups is made, it is seen that Armenians have the largest number of hate speech items against them with 391 items. Syrians follow them with 244 items and Jews has the third place with 195 items. Christians with 84 items, Cypriot Greeks and/or Greeks of Turkey with 77 items, non-Muslims with 44 items, the British with 42 items, Greeks with 31 items and atheists with 31 items follow them as the groups that are subjected to hate speech.

In the section where discourse targeting women and LGBTIs are analyzed, you can find qualitative analyses through a limited number of examples, which are selected with the purpose of exposing and questioning the patriarchal and heteronormative discourse which is rooted in journalism and used intentionally or unintentionally.
