This book consists of the presentations made at the 3 day conference titled Wounding Words and Acts: Hate Speech and Hate Crimes, an activity vvithin the "Media Watch on Hate Speech" project of the Hrant Dink Foundation, realized with the financial support of the European Commission's European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights, Global Dialogue and Friedrich Naumann Stiftung. Throughout the Conference, the participants discussed the povver of speech and discourse, Turkey's sociological structure, the role of the media on the road from Hrant Dink's murder to the Malatya Zirve massacre, works for combating hate speech and hate crimes from Turkey and other countries, the national, regional and international mechanisms and standards available, the problems in the media, the hate speech in the new media, and why Turkey's legal system falls short in combating discrimination.

But most importantly, we, as the human rights advocates, academi-cians, jurists, journalists, citizens and victims of discrimination of this country, have once again seen that the fight against hate speech and hate crimes is not limited to what we vvitness and experience in Turkey, but it is a problem that is getting more and more widespread ali around the world, particularly in Europe and USA. We have also seen that it is not possible to achieve a permanent solution unless we combine our strengths and experiences, cooperate and communicate, with works and studies on a wide range of areas, so as to combat hate crimes and hate speech both in Turkey and at the international level.

We hope that the activities we have conducted throughout the Media Watch on Hate Speech project and the articles you will find in this book will play an informative and encouraging role and serve as a facilitating tool in the fight against hate speech and hate crimes worldwide.
