In the discussion Menno Ettema, Programme Manager at the No Hate Speech and Anti-Discrimination Cooperation Unit of the Council of Europe, and Programme Director of Yuva Association Özge Sönmez will attend as speakers. In the event moderated by Hakan Kahraman, Coordinator of Grants Program of Sabancı Foundation, the effects of Covid-19 pandemics on human rights-based work in combating hate speech and discrimination, and the challenges and opportunities created by online methods in a changing order will be discussed.

The participation will be available through Zoom meeting. The information and link of the Zoom meeting will be sent after the registration.

The discussion will also be broadcasted live on Twitter and Youtube channels of the Foundation. 

The language of the event will be in Turkish and English. There will be a simultaneous translation for both languages.

Menno Ettema

Menno Ettema is Programme Manager at the No Hate Speech and Anti-Discrimination Cooperation unit, Anti-Discrimination Department of the Council of Europe and Co-secretariat of new interdisciplinary Committee of Experts on Combatting Hate Speech which is to draft a recommendation by the Committee of Ministers on a comprehensive approach to addressing hate speech within a human rights framework. In his function, he brings together the organizations' work on combatting hate speech and discrimination through standards setting, monitoring, and capacity building programs in cooperation with European partners and member states. Mr. Ettema previously worked as the European coordinator of the No Hate Speech Movement, a youth campaign of the Council of Europe to mobilize young people for human rights and against hate speech online (2016-17) and as an educational advisor (2010-2015) for the Youth Department of the Council of Europe. Before that, he worked with youth peace organizations in the Middle East and coordinated the international secretariat of the United Network of Youth Peacebuilders. Mr. Ettema studied Psychology of Culture and Religion at the University of Nijmegen, the Netherlands.


Özge Sönmez

One of the co-founders of Yuva Association, Özge Sönmez is a graduate of Istanbul University Faculty of Economics and has been conducting education-based studies in civil society for about 15 years. Continuing to work at YUVA, she also provides content consultancy to different non-governmental organizations in the field of training. After the Syrian crisis, Sönmez works particularly in the field of inclusive education on identifying the needs in education. She also works on the schooling of girls in Turkey with the title and responsibility of Malala Fund Education Champion.


Hakan Kahraman

Born in 1983 in İstanbul, Hakan Kahraman met with the civil society while studying at Marmara University, Department of Economics. While working as a volunteer in non-governmental organizations operating in different fields, he started working at the Community Volunteers Foundation (TOG). During these years when he learned civil society and gain experiences on non-formal education, he started to think about human rights. As participant, facilitator and trainer, he took part in many local, national and international rights-based training. He worked with teams that designed training programs, workshops and board games on discrimination, peace, human rights, social rights, and gender themes. He has been working at Sabancı Foundation since 2017.
