As a part of the workshop series within the scope of the project “Utilizing Digital Technology for Social Cohesion, Positive Messaging and Peace by Boosting Collaboration, Exchange and Solidarity”, the fifth workshop “Digital Media Literacy” took place on Thursday, November 9th, 2023. The workshop facilitated by researcher and campaigner Shmyla Khan was held at the Hrant Dink Foundation with 15 participants.
The workshop began with an activity in which participants assessed digital threats in different fields. Then, Shmyla Khan explained the concept of online threats and what online threats could be. Emphasizing the importance of the concept of digital security, Khan mentioned that digital security is not solely the responsibility of individuals and that different solutions can be developed based on the situations and needs of individuals.
In the second part of the workshop, Khan and the participants discussed how encryption is developed in communication tools, which digital tools are more secure in terms of data collection, and how different communication tools can be used more securely. Khan also pointed out that disinformation and incomplete information are part of digital threats, and she shared methods for fact-checking and documenting such information. The workshop concluded by emphasizing that ensuring security in the online environment is a long-term practice and that prioritizing the well-being of individuals is essential.
