Co-financed by the European Union and the Republic of Turkey, the project “Towards a New Discourse and Dialogue” was held between December 5-8, 2019 in Istanbul. 24 employees from public, media and civil society organizations working on refugees in Istanbul, Hatay and Sanliurfa attended the training.

Towards a New Discourse and Dialogue project aims to question the existing prejudices and discrimination against Syrian refugees and to cooperate with public, media and civil society sectors for creating a new, human rights-based discourse to enhance the possibility of coexistence in Turkey.

For this purpose, a training module was designed with a non-formal education methodology that focuses on interactive learning and experience. An application call was opened to public, media and civil society employees who want to take part in promoting a new discourse that respects human rights. The applications were evaluated based on the application forms and requirements. After the interviews with short-listed applicants, 24 employees from 19 different institutions were accepted.

The training for trainers consisted of sessions on human rights principles and values, discrimination and methods for combating discrimination, migration, refugee rights, discriminatory discourse, hate speech and alternative discourse. Also, the participants found the opportunity to listen and share their experiences with other participants from the public, media and civil society sectors.

All employees who have fully participated in the training of trainers will disseminate the training module in their institutions in the upcoming months.
