Hrant Dink Foundation is awarded the Chirac Prize For Conflict Prevention by the Chirac Foundation. On behalf of the Hrant Dink Foundation, President of the Foundation, Rakel Dink, received the prize from the President of French Republic Emmanuel Macron. Below is Macron's speech addressed to Rakel Dink:
On the ninth year of the prize, the awardees were announced following the meeting of the Chirac Foundation’s Jury on September 27th. The Chirac Foundation also presented its Culture for Peace Prize to Zoukak theater company, which has been contributing, through theater, to the rehabilitation efforts of refugees living in Lebanon camps.
Chirac Foundation was established in 2008 by the former President of the French Republic, Jacques Chirac, with the mission to ‘support efforts for prevention of conflicts, dialogue between cultures and increasing quality of access to health services’.
During the prize ceremony, which was attended by the Jury members and selection committee as well as the international media and leading opinion makers that pursue rights-based advocacy, President of Hrant Dink Foundation, Rakel Dink, received the prize from the President of French Republic Emmanuel Macron. Your Excellency President Macron, Esteemed Chirac Family, Distinguished Guests,
When we decided to establish this Foundation with our friends after the tragedy that our family suffered in 2007, we had just one intention: to continue Hrant’s efforts with this institution, and try to fill the huge emptiness created in our lives with his struggle for human rights. The racist mentality that made him a target, an enemy and that killed him, is not only trying to get its share of power in Turkey today, but this mentality is rising in the world too, creating new “others” and enemies”, putting up new walls. This world has seen so much pain, isn’t it enough now? So much blood and tears have been shed, isn’t it enough? Instead of propagating pain and suffering, shouldn’t we try to find ways to heal the existing pain? The goal of the states should not be to kill, but to keep alive! For God “has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and self-control” [Bible, 2. Timothy 1:7]
As an Armenian who knows what it means to be displaced, it gives me great pain to see millions of refugees being uprooted and dispersed in the world today. And watching the response of the states to this situation is particularly striking… Unfortunately hate speech is rising all around the world and pushing people into further withdrawing into their own religious or ethnic communities.
But hate speech is not the only thing on the rise. The voices of human rights defenders are also rising. The goal of our Foundation is to fight against discrimination, starting from our own home Turkey, create a language of dialogue and peace, bring different identities closer, protect cultural heritage, improve Turkey-EU relations, open borders in an era when walls are being erected, contribute to the development of Turkey-Armenia relations and most important of all, to overcome the borders in people’s minds. To achieve all these, in Turkey we are working together as Armenians, Turks, Kurds, Muslims and Christians. It makes us proud to be part of the huge family striving for the same ideals and fighting for human rights in the world. Even though it sometimes feels as if we were struggling against huge waves, it gives us hope to know that we are not alone, either in Turkey or in the world. Receiving this prize together with the inspiring Zoukak Theater Company and being with you today has made us stronger. On behalf of myself and our Foundation, I would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude for this prize, which we hope will give further strength to everyone striving for democracy and going through challenging times in Turkey.
Monsieur le Président Macron, Chère Famille Chirac et les Directeurs de Fondation, Chers Invités;
Suite au désastre que nous avons vécu dans notre famille en 2007, nous avons décidé avec les amis de monter la Fondation. Cette Fondation n’a qu’une seule intention: Poursuivre la cause de Hrant, essayer de remplir le grand vide qui s’est créé dans notre vie par sa lutte pour les droits de l’homme. La mentalité raciste, qui l’a visé, qui l’a affiché comme ennemi et qui l’a tué, non seulement partage aujourd’hui le pouvoir en Turquie, mais elle monte aussi dans le monde entier, en créant des nouveaux ‘autres’ et des nouveaux ‘ennemis’, et en construisant des murs. Tant de souffrances ont été vécues au monde, cela ne suffi-t-ilt pas? Tant de sang et larmes écoulés ne suffisent-ils pas ? Ne faudrait-il pas trouver des remèdes aux souffrances déjà existantes au lieu de multiplier les souffrances ? L’objectif des Etats doit être de faire vivre et non de tuer! Parce que « Dieu nous a donné un Esprit qui, loin de faire de nous des lâches, nous rend forts, aimants et réfléchis » [Bible, 2.Timoteos 1:7]
En tant qu’arménienne déterritorialisée, je souffre aujourd’hui de voir des millions de réfugiés arrachés de leur racine, dispersés dans le monde. Et quelle désespérance de constater les positions prises par les Etats au sujet de cette situation... Malheureusement, le discours de haine augmente dans le monde entier et conduit les gens à s’enfermer dans leur quartier selon leur appartenance ethnique et religieuse.
Pourtant, ce n’est pas seulement le discours de haine qui monte. La voix des défendeurs des droits de l’homme augmente de plus en plus aussi. Le but de notre fondation, c’est de lutter contre la discrimination en commençant par notre patrie la Turquie, de construire un langage de dialogue et de paix, rapprocher les cultures diverses, protéger l’héritage culturelle, développer les relations entre la Turquie et l’Europe, ouvrir les frontières pendant une période où on construit des murs, contribuer à l’amélioration des relations entre la Turquie et l’Arménie et le plus important, de surpasser les frontières existantes dans la tête des personnes. Nous, les arméniens, les turcs, les kurdes, les musulmans et les chrétiens, nous travaillons tous ensemble en Turquie pour ces causes. Nous sommes honorés de faire partie d’une grande famille qui travaille pour les mêmes idéaux et qui contribue aux droits des hommes dans le monde entier. Même si parfois nous avons l’impression de lutter contre des hautes vagues, la conviction de ne pas être seuls ni en Turquie ni dans le monde entier nous donne de l’espoir.
Aujourd’hui nous sommes de nouveau revigorés en étant parmi vous et en recevant ce prix avec l’inspirante Ensemble Zoukak. Je vous remercie très sincèrement personnellement et aussi au nom de notre Fondation pour ce prix, en espérant que celui-ci encourage tous ceux qui travaillent en Turquie pour la construction de la démocratie et qui passent par des moments difficiles.

Երբ 2007թ. մեր ընտանիքի վերապրած ողբերգությունից հետո մեր ընկերների հետ միասին որոշեցինք հիմնել այս հիմնադրամը, միայն մեկ մտադրություն ունեինք՝ շարունակել Հրանտի ջանքերը այս կառույցի միջոցով, ու մարդու իրավունքների համար պայքարելով փորձել լրացնել մեր կյանքում ստեղծված մեծ դատարկությունը: Ռասիստական մտածողությունը, որ նրան թիրախ եւ թշնամի դարձրեց, եւ որը սպանեց նրան, այսօր ոչ միայն ջանում է իշխանություն ձեռք բերել Թուրքիայում, այլև տարածվում է ամբողջ աշխարհում՝ ստեղծելով նոր «ուրիշներ» եւ «թշնամիներ», վեր խոյացնելով նոր պատեր: Այս աշխարհն այնքան ցավ է ապրել. արդյո՞ք սա բավական չէ: Այսքան արյուն եւ արցունք է թափվել, հերի՞ք չէ: Ցավ ու տառապանք քարոզելու փոխարեն՝ չպիտի արդյո՞ք ուղիներ գտնենք ամոքելու ցավը: Պետությունների նպատակը չպիտի լինի սպանելը, այլ կենդանի պահելը․ «Որովհետեւ Աստուած մեզ երկչոտութեան ոգի չտուեց, այլ՝ զօրութեան, սիրոյ եւ զգաստութեան:» (Աստվածաշունչ, Տիմոթեոս 2 1:7):
Որպես հայ, ով գիտի թե ինչ է նշանակում լինել տեղահանված, ես ցավ եմ ապրում՝ տեսնելով տեղահան եղած ու աշխարհով մեկ ցրված միլիոնավոր փախստականներին: Հատկապես ապշեցուցիչ է հետեւել այս իրավիճակի վերաբերյալ պետությունների արձագանքին: Ատելության խոսքը թափ է առնում ողջ աշխորհում եւ ստիպում մարդկանց էլ ավելի մեկուսանալ իրենց սեփական կրոնական եւ ազգային համայնքներում:
Միայն ատելության խոսքը չէ, սակայն, որ թափ է առնում: Մարդու իրավունքների պաշտպանների ձայները ևս բարձրանում են: Մեր հիմնադրամի նպատակն է պայքարել խտրականության դեմ՝ սկսած մեր սեփական տնից՝ Թուրքիայից, ստեղծել երկխոսության եւ խաղաղության լեզու, տարբեր ինքնության մարդկանց մերձեցնել, պահպանել մշակութային ժառանգությունը, բարելավել Թուրքիա-ԵՄ հարաբերությունները, բացել սահմանները մի ժամանակաշրջանում, երբ պատեր են կառուցվում, նպաստել Թուրքիա-Հայաստան հարաբերություններին, եւ ամենակարեւորը, հաղթահարել մարդկանց մտքում գոյություն ունեցող սահմանները: Այս ամենին հասնելու համար Թուրքիայում մենք գործում ենք միասնաբար՝ հայերով, թուրքերով, քրդերով, մահմեդականներով եւ քրիստոնյաներով: Մենք հպարտ ենք լինել մասը այդ մեծ ընտանիքը, որը կռիվ է տալիս նույն գաղափարների համար եւ ողջ աշխարհում պայքարում է մարդու իրավունքների համար: Չնայած երբեմն մեզ թվում է, թե մենք պայքարում ենք մեծ ալիքների դեմ, մեզ անչափ հույս է տալիս այն գիտակցումը, որ մենք միայնակ չենք՝ լինի Թուրքիայում, թե աշխարհում: Այս մրցանակն ստանալով ոգեշնչող «Զուկակ» թատերական ընկերության հետ միասին եւ այսօր լինելով այստեղ ձեզ հետ՝ մենք ավելի ուժեղ ենք դառնում: Իմ եւ մեր հիմնադրամի անունից՝ սրտանց ցանկանում եմ երախտագիտություն հայտնել մրցանակի համար, որը, հուսով ենք, էլ ավելի կզորացնի բոլոր նրանց, ովքեր Թուրքիայում պայքարում են ժողովրդավարության համար եւ դժվարին ժամանակներ են ապրում:
