In the history of modern nationalism, public memory has traditionally served to affirm a “positive” national history. Against this backdrop, highlighting “negative” national history in public space remains a contested endeavor. In this workshop, we will discuss typical socio-political attitudes that can be observed in respective controversies. Drawing on an early debate over national memory in post-war Germany, this workshop will enable the participants to analyze and reflect arguments for and against commemorating a “negative” national past in public space: What are the underlying concepts of history and society?

Participation in the workshop is limited to 15 people. In order to participate in the workshop please fill in the form below. The deadline for the application is 12 November, 18:00 pm. The applicants will be informed on the 14th of November.

The workshop will be held in English.
