Journalist Banu Güven conducted an in-depth conversation with Helena Maleno Garzón, laureate of the 2025 International Hrant Dink Award, on September 17, 2025, at the Anarad Higutyun Building, focusing on migration, human rights, and solidarity.
Helena Maleno Garzón, an investigative journalist, human rights defender, and founder of Caminando Fronteras, has been documenting the lives lost on migration routes across the Mediterranean and Atlantic for years, operating an emergency hotline and holding states accountable.
In the conversation, Maleno Garzón shares what receiving the award means to her, the connection she has forged with Hrant Dink's legacy and the struggle of the Armenian people. She speaks about the relationships she built with migrant communities after settling in Morocco in 2001, the double meaning of Caminando Fronteras' name ("walking the borders" and simultaneously "undermining the borders"), and the significance of their Death Reports—which have documented 31,528 migrant deaths since 2018—for the families. She discusses the European Union's migration policies, the economic interests behind the border control industry, and the importance of continuing to build life in the face of it all.
