PROPOSED FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITY
The Istanbul Museum of Modern Art, Turkey’s first private museum to organize modern and contemporary art exhibitions, was founded in 2004 and occupies an 8,000 square meter site on the shores of the Bosphorus. Istanbul Modern embraces a global vision to collect, preserve, exhibit and document works of modern and contemporary art and make them accessible to art lovers. As part of its commitment to sharing Turkey’s artistic creativity with wide audiences and promoting its cultural identity in the international art world, Istanbul Modern hosts a broad array of interdisciplinary activities. Apart from permanent and temporary exhibition galleries, a photography gallery, and spaces for educational and social programs, the museum offers a cinema, restaurant, design store and an extensive library.
The fellow will be expected to conduct:
- Research and documentation on contemporary artists and art institutions in Turkey and Armenia.
- Comparative research on the visual culture of the region and different approaches by looking at the the impacts of the historical and current socio-cultural contexts of Turkey and Armenia on visual art works. In order to conduct this research, the fellow can use the library, the files of the artists and exhibition catalogues of temporary exhibitions as well as the collections of Istanbul Modern.
- Research on Armenian artists who participated in Istanbul Modern collections, and their visibility in Armenia. Preparing a report on the relationship between the institutions those artists are affiliated to and the collections of those artists.
- Research on Turkey and Armenia video art within the 2017 program of Artists’ Film International focusing on moving pictures of which Istanbul Modern is also one of the partners, and sharing the research with the visitors of the museum in public events organized in parallel to the exhibition.
- Research on the art history of Armenia focusing on the relationship between football and visual arts.
EXPECTED PROFILE

At least;
M.A. student of the Department of Art History
or
M.A. student of the Department of Culture and/or Art Administration or Curatorial Studies
- Experience
Work experience in an art museum or art institution
or
Work experience as a freelance curator, project coordinator or art critic
- Language Skills
Good command of written and verbal English
- Know-how
Word, Excel, Powerpoint and similar MS Office, and ability to use computer programmes
CONDITIONS OF THE FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITY
- From Monday to Friday
- Between 10.00 and 18.00
- The fellow will be based at Istanbul Modern Library
- The fellow will be off on weekends and all the public holidays in Turkey. The fellow also can take the days off on official and religious holidays in Armenia.
- The lunch break is between 12.30 - 13.30 served by the cafeteria of Istanbul Modern.
- Laptop and stationary equipments are provided.
