PROPOSED FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITY

Dokuz Eylül University was founded in 1982 in the third biggest city of Turkey, Izmir, as the second public university of this city. As a ‘city university’ Dokuz Eylul University is spread over various districts of Izmir. At present the university has education and recreation facilities in 12 different locations. DEU has 12 faculties, 10 institutes, 5 schools, 6 vocational schools, 1 conservatory, 36 centers of research and one of the best University hospitals of Turkey. As of 2015, 3310 academic and 2.417 administrative staff are working at the University. Students of the University add up to 66835.

DEU is the first university which applied the problem-based learning method in Turkey, beginning in the School of Medicine in 1997. Moreover, the University owns a learning resources center which is the first in Turkey and the second in the world. Its Central Library also ranks among the best in Turkey in terms of both technical infrastructure and amount of publications.

Dokuz Eylül University has international collaboration protocols with many universities from various countries for the conduct of student and academic staff exchange as well as for the realisation of scientific research projects. The University has also been actively involved in EU education programs with a variety of international bilateral agreements for student and academic staff exchange.

We are looking for Master or Ph.D. candidates who are at the dissertation-writing stage or post-doctoral fellows who are specializing on Turkish political life, Turkish foreign policy or Turkey-Armenia relations. The fellow student can receive advising from one or two of our professors at the Department of International Relations. Meanwhile the student can attend our non-credit bearing masters or Ph.D. courses on topics including Current Issues in Turkish Foreign Policy, Foreign Policy Analysis, Security Studies, and Theories of International Relations. The Master or Ph. D. candidate or post-doctoral fellow can also attend our undergraduate (bachelor) courses including the International Organisations, Turkish Political Structure, Turkish Foreign Policy before and after Cold War, Theories of International Relations and Diplomatic History. In addition to attending courses, the fellow students may also assist one of our professors in the courses they choose. They can help with organizing the course and grading. The professor may also request fellow’s assistance to give one or two lectures. As part of the Turkish Foreign Policy course, our department can organize a workshop on Turkey-Armenia relations with the assistance of the fellow student.

Department of International Relations can provide the fellow student a desk space and computer and access to library.

EXPECTED PROFILE 

Good command of English. Master or Ph.D. candidates who are at the dissertation writing stage or post-doctorate students who are concentrating on Turkish political life, Turkish foreign policy, Turkey-Armenia relations.

CONDITIONS OF THE FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITY

The fellow student can follow the same schedule our research assistants follow with certain extent of freedom. The fellow student is expected to be present on the campus from Monday to Friday from 9:00 and 17:30. The public holidays in Turkey are days off. The fellow can easily travel to Ankara or Istanbul for meeting universities or diplomats for research purpose, in case needed.

4 to 6 months between January – June 2017
