The Istanbul Museum of Modern Art, Turkey’s first museum of modern art, was founded in 2004 and occupies an 8,000 square meter site on the shores of the Bosphorus. The museum is looking for a fellow to hold a research on Contemporary Art in Armenia and in Turkey.
- Doing a research on and creating a list of contemporary artists and existing art institutions in Armenia and Turkey.
- Doing a comparative analyses of the common and diversified approaches to visual culture of the region, by researching impacts of the historical and contemporary socio-cultural context in Turkey and Armenia on visual arts. The fellow may benefit from the works from Istanbul Modern collection exhibition, as well as the files and catalogues of artists that Istanbul Modern has worked with, through its library and at temporary exhibitions.
- Suggesting actors and institutions to provide cooperation between Turkey and Armenia. Working together with the curator team of Istanbul Modern, designing projects and activities between two countries.
- Doing a research on the visibility of Armenian artists whose works are in Istanbul Modern collection, particularly in Armenia. Making a comparative research of the institutions and collections, where their works are exhibited.
- Doing a research on the video art in Armenia and in Turkey, within the framework of the Artists’ Film International 2018 programme, a collaborative project featuring film, video and animation from around the world, where Istanbul Modern is one of the partners. The fellow is expected to share the research the visitors of the museum during public events, organised in parallel with the exhibition.
- Doing a research on “the relation between football and visual arts” in the history of art in Armenia; and making a comparative analyses with the examples of the same topic which have been done in Turkey.
EXPECTED PROFILE
1. Education
At least an MA degree on History of Art
or
At least being a MA candidate either on Culture and/or Arts Management OR Curatorial Studies
2. Experience
Having experience of working at an Art Museum or an Art Centre
or
having experience as a Freelance Curator, Project Coordinator or an Art Critique
3. Language
Very good command of English (written & oral)
4. Other
Very good command of MS Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint…etc.)
CONDITIONS OF THE FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITY
The fellow is expected to be present at the office during five weekdays between 10:00 and 18:00. Lunch break is at 12:30-13:30 and the fellow will be offered lunch at the museum’s cafeteria. Weekends and all Turkish official holidays are off days (Armenian holidays can also be taken as off days upon agreement)
The fellow will be provided a laptop and office tools.
The fellowship activity will be implemented in Istanbul, Turkey.

6 months between October 2017-June 2018
