Beyond Istanbul is a cross-disciplinary, independent, demand-responsive urban institute, focused on issues of spatial justice in Istanbul and beyond. Beyond Istanbul provides theoretic context and deep local knowledge on the historical layers and contemporary transformations of Istanbul. The organisation is looking for fellows in the fields of Spatial Studies, Urban Development, Participatory Planning and Design , urban development, participatory planning and design.
Beyond Istanbul will provide a space for fellowship activities to be implemented and support for a participant to connect with local communities and 'urban hot spots' for 8 months.
We work on the issues of spatial justice, aiming to bring together transnational knowledge and cross-disciplinary expertise with local communities, to help to (re-)produce spaces and practices of hope.
Many urban communities (evicted/dispossessed/impoverished) are either excluded from / badly affected by the decisions on their city, or lack access to resources, including expertise, to overcome injustices.
We expect to develop together with the fellow his/her particular project in Istanbul. The process will be participatory and supportive. Proposed fellowship activities might include:
- Mapping dispossession of minority communities in Istanbul
- Developing new means of documenting, analysing and disseminating urban heritage in Istanbul
- Developing an exchange urban research tours program between Armenia and Turkey
- Actively contribute blog posts to beyond.istanbul site in English on a specific subject
- Organise one public event in partnership with HDF during the fellowship period
- Contribute to hopearchive.org project of our center, by identifying “spaces of hope” from Armenia and including them to the map
EXPECTED PROFILE
Our fellowship programme targets urban researchers, architects, designers, city planners, investigative journalists, artists, bloggers, interested in the issues of spatial justice in Istanbul and beyond.
CONDITIONS OF THE FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITY
The fellow is expected the be present at the office from Monday to Friday, between 10:00 and 18:00. All official holidays are off.
The fellowship will be implemented in Istanbul, Turkey.
