The years between 1914 and 1922 marked a period of radical rupture and transformation for Istanbul. This book is a compilation of papers presented at the international conference titled "Istanbul 1914-1922: War, Collapse, Occupation, and the History of Resistance" held in Istanbul on November 4-5, 2022.

Spanning World War I, the Armistice of Mudros, and the Allied occupation, the book explores a city acting simultaneously as a stage for political polarization, a refuge for White Russian émigrés, and the organizing center for the "National Struggle" movement. Bringing together perspectives from history, sociology, economic history, and cultural studies, and utilizing various state archives and personal narratives, this volume discusses diverse topics including immigration, diplomacy, literature, and theater, as well as the continuity of resistance and the survival strategies of Istanbul's diverse communities during this tense period.
