Let's Pin Down the Headline at the Neighbour's! April 2015 - Armenia

A group of 9 journalists from Turkey visited Armenia from April 20th to 25th, 2015 in the seventh year of the Turkey-Armenia Journalists’ Dialogue Programme, organised by the Hrant Dink Foundation with the support of the MyMedia programme of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark.

In the 7th year of the programme, which aims at strengthening ties between journalists from Turkey and Armenia and contributing to establishment of direct and accurate means of exchanging news sources, politics and diplomacy journalists from Turkey had the chance to visit Armenia during the week of commemoration events dedicated to the centennial of the Armenian Genocide. The journalists participating in the programme visited media outlets, civil society organisations, met with their colleagues and took part in the commemoration events dedicated to the centennial of the Armenian Genocide.

Journalists from CNN Türk, Cumhuriyet, Hürriyet, Kanal D, Milliyet, Sabah, Yeni Şafak, Star and 360 TV paid their first visit to Armenia and thanks to their meetings with various media outlets such as Armenian Public TV H1, CivilNet and Yerkir Media, they got to know their colleagues in Armenia and exchanged their opinions about media landscape in both countries. The group also came together in a dinner with former programme participants from Armenia who visited Turkey in November 2014.

The journalists met the International Secretary of Armenian Revolutionary Federation Dashnaktsutyun Giro Manoyan. They were informed about the history and the present of the party and discussed the future prospects of Turkey-Armenia relations and how to solve the common problems in this light.

The journalists visited the Caucasus Institute and met with the Institute Director Alexander Iskandaryan. They discussed the consequences of the sealed Turkey-Armenia border, the impact of Turkey-Armenia relations on the Caucasus and also were informed about the studies made by the Caucasus Institute.

Journalists also met Vahram-Ter Matevosyan - an international relations expert lecturing at the American University of Armenia and discussed the current situation of Turkey-Armenia relations and the future steps to be taken to improve the dialogue.

The group was hosted by the Head of Delegation of the EU Delegation to Armenia, Ambassador Traian Hristea and discussed EU-Armenia relations, EU programmes implemented in Armenia as well as the EU’s role in Turkey-Armenia relations.

During the programme, the journalists had an exclusive visit to the Genocide Museum-Institute which has been under renovation for 3 years and was reopened for visitors on April 25th. Thanks to a guided tour by the Director Hayk Demoyan, the participants had the opportunity to see the newly opened sections of the museum, receive detailed information about the past, see some of the original documents and interview the Museum Director.

On April 23rd, the journalists attended and reported from the historic canonization ceremony of the martyrs of the Armenian Genocide held by the Holy Etchmiadzin Church.

On April 24th, the journalists participated in the official and public commemorations of the Armenian Genocide at the Armenian Genocide Memorial. They had the chance to do live broadcast and share their observations with their audience.

As part of the 5-day visit, the group also made excursions to Kafesjian Museum, Cascade complex, Garni Temple and Geghard Monastery.
