The message in the bottle was discovered in 2003, in former Sachsenhausen Nazi Camp that operated between the years 1936-1945 and which is located in Oranienburg region, 35 km north of Berlin. The construction worker Jürgen Steffin discovered the bottle which was hanging on a wire inside a hollow brick. The message inside the bottle was written by Anton Engerman, who was imprisoned in the camp for eight years because of being a member of the anti-Nazi resistance underground in Germany.
The message said:
I want to return home again. Since 9 March 1937 in Concentration Camp Sachsenhausen. Today is 19 April 1944. When will I see my love in Frechen, Cologne, once more? But my spirit is unbroken. Things must get better soon. Anton Engermann, born 6.10.1902.
The message in the bottle which is currently exhibited in Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum shows the power of the objects and stands as an evidence that even though over a half century has passed, the truth does not disappear.
