This workshop will enable participants to gain experience with how body mapping practice is performed. There are a range of tools, both verbal and non-verbal, that assist survivors in coming to terms with past conflict and atrocities. Art methodologies provide an alternate language for survivors to capture the trauma of their experiences and creatively engage with the past while envisioning a new future. In this active workshop, participants will learn about body mapping, a technique in which one tells a story through a life-sized drawing of her or his body. The International Coalition of Sites of Conscience has been using this reconciliation technique around the world, through its Global Initiative for Justice, Truth and Reconciliation, to build reconciliation in locations such as Sri Lanka, Guinea, and Uganda. The workshop will draw on those powerful experiences and ask participants to participate themselves in an abbreviated version of the bodymapping process.
