KACUV enables the continuous treatment for children whose treatment could not be afforded due to financial difficulties and ensures psychological support, which is a vital requirement in the battle against cancer, and a treatment environment suitable for child psychology. The foundation was established in 2000, in Istanbul. KACUV supports childhood cancers in different ways:

  • Children and their families are supported physcologically, socially and financially during the hospitilazation period. KACUV also renovates hospital rooms, makes play rooms and education classes.
  • KACUV Family Homes provide accommodation for children and their families coming outside of Istanbul during the treatment period after hospitilazation. KACUV operates two family home with 14 rooms in European side of Istanbul and the second one in Anatolian side of Istanbul with 22 rooms. Families benefit from services completely free of charge like food, house cleaning, psycho-social support and educational services.
  • The foundation works on educating the public and creating awareness for childhood cancer.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROPOSED FELLOWSHİP ACTIVITY

KACUV wishes to host a civil society organisation specialist who works in the field of health in general and more specifically, childhood cancer. The priority of the KACUV's work is not medical treatment, but psycho-social support. The fellow will contact the children undergoing cancer treatment at the child hematology and oncology services and will have the opportunity to observe how these areas, which are caused by the difficulties of the treatment process, are transformed into child-friendly places. The fellow will observe the implementation of different activities together with the volunteers that will support their psycho-social processes with children between the ages of 3 and 18. The fellow will carry out activities and educational activities in accordance with the developmental stages of children with chronic diseases. The fellow will be given the opportunity to learn about children’s right to health. In addition, conducting the fellowship at KACUV, a non-governmental organization working in the field of health, the fellow will gain know-how about different working areas such as projects, resource development, communication activities, volunteering.

EXPECTED PROFILE

  • Civil society organization specialist (NGO)
  • Experience of working in the field of chronic illness, preferably childhood cancer
  • Having a hospital experience
  • Conducting a training program with children with chronic diseases between the ages of 3 and 18
  • Having experience with donors and volunteers in NGO

CONDITIONS OF THE FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITY

The office hours are between 09:00 and 18:00 on weekdays.

PROPOSED TIME FOR THE FELLOWSHIP

One month duration between September - October 2020.
