YSMU is nearly a one hundred year old institution, preparing graduate students and professionals. Since 2001 the instruction languages are Armenian, Russian, and English. Roughly 800 students graduate yearly as diploma specialists from faculties of general medicine, stomatology, pharmacy, military medicine and public health. Currently the university has 6000 students, about 1800 of which are international students. They come from more than 30 countries. YSMU has three clinical complexes: №1 University Hospital Complex, "Muratsan" Children's Hospital, and Mikayelyan Institute of Surgery.
YSMU library has more than 250000 books in different languages. YSMU has established 2 simulation centers: one for future medical doctors and one for future dentists. The centers enable the students to approach the “patient” a dozen or even a hundred times with the aim to undergo training and be skilled specialists. The future doctors can conduct endoscopic, neurosurgical, cardiac surgical operations, injections, surgical suture, childbirth process, first aid service, etc. In the dental simulation center the special simulators completely repeat the outline of the human anatomy. Due to the advanced technical equipment, the students can see the instructor’s work on the special screens and repeat it on a moulage.
AREA / SUBJECT OF THE FELLOWSHIP
Traditionally, the subject matter of pathology in Eastern Europe and post-Soviet countries was divided into two fields – pathological anatomy, which deals with the structural changes underlying diseases and pathological processes, and Pathophysiology, which focuses on the causes and mechanisms of disease. Both of these subjects in most of the world are taught as Pathology – a subject that unifies and incorporates both pathophysiology and pathoanatomy, thus involves causes, mechanisms, morphological changes and manifestations of diseases. Moreover, current understanding of pathology also integrates frontiers in molecular pathology, genetics, and biology. Therefore, we believe that a contemporary pathologist is covering the whole spectrum in general and a specific field – in deeper fashion.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PROPOSED FELLOWSHİP ACTIVITY
The fellow is expected to conduct a two week training for the faculty members. The module conditionally called “Pathology for specialists” will include selected topics on general pathology i.e cell injury, cell death pathways, autophagy, detection of apoptosis, acute and chronic inflammation, chronic low grade inflammation, immunopathology, etc. and pathology of the selected field of system pathology in which the fellow is an expert (e.g. neuropathology).
The training will be delivered in the form of lectures and small group discussions, and possibly demonstration of particular techniques. The fellow is also expected to deliver two lectures for YSMU students. Depending on the field of expertise, sessions on teaching a specific research method are also possible. The fellow may also participate in the routine work of the departments of pathophysiology and pathoanatomy.
