Sabanci University Gender and Women’s Studies Center of Excellence (SU Gender) works to raise awareness about gender both within and beyond the university. Our activities are geared towards eliminating all forms of discrimination, including gender identity, sexual orientation, language, ethnic background, class and faith; creating discussion and sharing environments that support pluralism, creativity, equality and solidarity; making academic knowledge available and accessible for all, and strengthening the flow and exchange of knowledge between the worlds of academia, civil society, art, politics, and everyday life. The main principles SU Gender embraces are gender equality, struggle against all forms of discrimination, pluralism, creativity, equality, solidarity, collective work, transparency, multivocality, open communication, making academic knowledge available and accessible for all. Our 4 main programs – Purple Certificate, Curious Steps, Transformative Activism, and Gender Equality – transform, educate, empower and inspire us all. Each year we give out grants to gender-related research and awards to articles in gender studies, organize an international conference, gender awareness, and education activities for civil society organizations, foundations, associations, and companies.

SU Gender is an interdisciplinary research center that supports researchers in the fields of anthropology, geography, literature, psychology, political science, and sociology, as well as the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and math). The center conducts gender-based research in a number of areas, develops new research projects with both national- and international-level partners, and organizes training and awareness-raising activities for young researchers.

AREA / SUBJECT OF THE FELLOWSHIP

The research area can be one or some of the following;

  • Gender and education
  • Gender in science and academia, with a special focus on gender equality in the academia
  • Gender-based violence
  • Gender and migration
  • Gender and sexuality
  • Gender, politics and cultural memory
  • Gender and medical anthropology
  • Gender, aesthetics, literature, film and performance studies

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROPOSED FELLOWSHİP ACTIVITY

We will welcome a fellow who is working on gender issues in relation to SU Gender’s research areas as listed above. We expect the fellow to contribute to either one of SU Gender’s program commissions (Purple Certificate or Curious Steps), conduct their research and give two talks and/or organize an event (e.g. panel, workshop) based on their field of research.

Current projects, activities, and research are as follows:

  • Curious Steps Program: Contribution to research conducted as part of the Curious Steps Program on gender, memory, and space; developing new stories for the program particularly in relation to the gendered Armenian memory of Istanbul http://cinsadimlar.org/
  • Purple Certificate Program: Supporting the Purple Folder project, which brings together high school teachers, university faculty members, experts, and students to design gender-based educational materials that can be used in the classroom and in extracurricular activities.

EXPECTED PROFILE

The fellow is expected to be a doctorate student, post-doctorate researcher or visiting academic from a university in Armenia or a feminist-activist from an NGO. Competency in English is required.

CONDITIONS OF THE FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITY

Conditions related to the fellowship will be determined in consideration with the university’s academic calendar, SU Gender’s research agenda, institutional requirements and through communication of needs between the fellow and the Center. Weekends are usually off unless there is a conference or a project activity (Especially Curious Steps project requires some weekend working).

PROPOSED TIME FOR THE FELLOWSHIP

One month duration between September 2020 - May 2021.
