AREA / SUBJECT OF THE FELLOWSHIP

Development of strategic giving culture and philanthropy infrastructure in Turkey and its neighborhood. Exploring the value of diaspora organizations in creating resources for civil society in countries of origin.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROPOSED FELLOWSHİP ACTIVITY

Diaspora giving has come to the fore as an important contributor of strategic external funds to burgeoning philanthropic initiatives in the country of origin. Consisted of the remittances of migrants or collections from displaced communities mainly resettled in industrialized nations for generations, diaspora giving empowers a wide range of civil society actors in home countries from relief funds to rights-based organizations. Yet, this phenomenon is underexplored, and there is limited information on the general characteristics, organizational structure and drivers of diaspora giving.

The fellow chosen to this program is thus expected to map, research, and report on current developments in global philanthropy landscape with a special concentration on diaspora giving. He/she will be tasked to probe different actors and methods of diaspora giving. He/she will be asked to report on the results of his/her research periodically. The fellow will submit an article to TUSEV’s monthly blogpost based on his analysis of the recent trends in diaspora giving. The fellow may also be asked to link his/her research to the development of civil society in Turkey and Armenia and take a comparative view on the contributions of each diaspora to this process.

EXPECTED PROFILE

The candidates that are going to be considered for this fellowship position are expected to possess a healthy interest in philanthropy, civil society, civic participation, culture of giving and participation in inclusive political and decision-making processes. Previous research experience in the aforementioned topics, as well as in Armenia – Turkey relations, would be preferred, but not required. Ability to take initiative, self motivation, and to work as a member of a multicultural team are highly valued. A graduate degree in social sciences is recommended. Proficiency in English is required.

CONDITIONS OF THE FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITY

TUSEV does not offer the fellow any form of compensation. The fellow will be subject to TUSEV’s regular working hours from 9am to 6pm, with an hour lunch break, Mondays to Fridays. TUSEV observes national holidays and closes its offices on all government holidays and special days.

PROPOSED TIME FOR THE FELLOWSHIP
