Established in 2005, ANAMED’s mission is to promote and produce cutting-edge scholarship contributing to the growing body of critical knowledge on Anatolia and its civilizations. The center aims to develop and facilitate research projects that are dedicated to the history, art, architecture, and archaeology of civilizations in Turkey through exhibitions, symposiums, fellowships, and publications. Located in the Beyoğlu district of Istanbul, ANAMED is near many research institutions, archives, and other scholarly facilities and thus serves as a convenient and comfortable locus for intensive study.

AREA / SUBJECT OF THE FELLOWSHIP

The proposed fellowship areas are Archeology, Art History, Heritage Studies, and History, from the Neolithic to Late Ottoman era (Early republican era is not included)

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROPOSED FELLOWSHİP ACTIVITY

Applications focusing on archaeology, art history, heritage, and history of Anatolia from the Neolithic through the Ottoman eras are welcome from Ph.D.- holding scholars of these and allied disciplines, including those that focus on the management, conservation, and presentation of the past.

The fellow will be given full access to the ANAMED Library, its library services, affiliates (via BiblioPera), and online resources. Library access includes borrowing privileges from the main campus library and inter-library loan within the network of participating institutions in Turkey. In addition, residential fellows can use library spaces 24/7.

Also, the fellow will be given full access to lectures, symposia, and other activities at ANAMED and on the main Koç University campus. ANAMED and Koç University organize and host a variety of scholarly activities and exhibits throughout the year, most of which are open to the public. ANAMED fellows have additional opportunities to interact with colleagues sharing interests in Anatolian civilizations at weekly “Friday Teas,” which sometimes feature short academic talks and always feature good conversation.

EXPECTED PROFILE 

Fellows must be proficient in English, the language of instruction at Koç University. ANAMED defines PhD-holding scholars as (1) Post-Doctoral scholar (scholars with Ph.D. degrees granted after 15 September 2015) and (2) Senior scholar (scholars with PhD degrees granted on or before 15 September 2015) Ph.D. students are ineligible.

CONDITIONS OF THE FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITY

Fellows are asked to remain in residence at ANAMED throughout the term of their appointment, devoting their time to research and writing on the subject of the fellowship research. Absences from ANAMED – whether research-related or other, within or outside Turkey – must be approved in advance and in writing (or email) by the Director.

Fellows are asked to participate regularly in the activities and intellectual life of ANAMED, including scholarly events, presentations, meetings, workshops, and related functions. ANAMED requires fellows to make brief presentations on their proposed research at ANAMED and to submit a final report on the progress of their work while at ANAMED.

PROPOSED TIME FOR THE FELLOWSHIP 

ANAMED welcomes fellows within the academic year, corresponding to between 21 September and 15 June each year. The Fellowship period must be between 1 March 2020 and 15 June 2020 or between 21 September 2020 and May 2021. The fellowship cannot include summer months (June 16 to September 21).
