Within November 1-15, 2020, four articles that generate hate speech were selected from print media. You can find four articles that contain hate speech against Armenians, Greeks, and LGBTQ as well as the analyses written about them below.1


1. 

Eskişehir İstikbal, 14 November 2020

The article published in İstikbal (Eskişehir) with the title “The Karabakh Victory” covers the war between Azerbaijan and Armenia and Karabakh’s inclusion to Azerbaijan as a result of the relations between two states for years. The remarks such as “Armenian terrorism”, “Armenia is a terrorist state” and “Armenians are sneaky and cunning” targets Armenian identity instead of certain forces and refers to Armenian origin and identity with racist descriptions.

Yeni Akit, 14 November 2020

The article published in Yeni Akit reports the funds that LGBTQ groups received from the foundations, but with the title “Western foundations feed perverted LGBTI” and the description “perverted homosexual associations targeting our family system”, LGBTQ groups are targeted with a severely discriminatory discourse and discrimination against LGBTQ identity is cemented through describing them as “perverted”.


Milat, 14 November 2020

The article published in Milat with the title “Armenians’ hatred of Turks” covers Armenia’s activities in the Eastern Anatolia and its interaction with the Soviet Union. Referring to “Armenians” repeatedly, the article holds Armenians responsible for the actions of government officials and associates Armenians with terrorism and hatred with the remark “Armenians never give up on the policy of terrorism and hatred.”

Yeni Çağrı, 15 November 2020

The article published in Yeni Çağrı with the title “The Karabakh Victory” covers Armenian-Azerbaijani relations in Karabakh region and Karabakh’s inclusion to Azerbaijan. With remarks such as “Since Armenians’ grudge and global powers’ plots are endless, we should be prepared for another international wave of terrorism”, Armenian identity is accused of being grudging and associated with international terrorism. In this way, discrimination and hostility against Armenian identity is fomented.


1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
