Within February 10-16, 2020, three articles that generate hate speech were selected from print media. You can find three articles that contain hate speech against Buddhists and Syrians as well as the analyses written about them below.1

The article written by Figen Öztürk for the newspaper Korkusuz reports CHP Nevşehir MP Faruk Sarıaslan’s speech at the parliament including the claim that Syrian refugees using “guest vehicle” plates are operating unlicensed cabs. With the title Pirates are called guests now” and summary “it is claimed that Syrian refugees using ‘guest vehicle’ plates are operating unlicensed cabs”, this claim is supported with an anti-immigrant discourse and an alleged crime committed by a group of people is attributed to Syrian and migrant identities.

The article published in Yeni Akit with the title “Another Buddhist violence in Rakhine” reports massacres of Muslims and humanitarian crises Myanmar by holding Buddhists responsible for massacre and violence as we see in the title and the following statement: “In the last month, Buddhists killed 6 people including 4 children; committed raped and set houses on fire.”


1.Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
