Within January 20-26, 2020, three articles that generate hate speech were selected from print media. You can find three articles that contain hate speech against  Greeks, Jews and Syrians as well as the analyses written about them below.1

In the article titled “Racist Jews set a mosque in Jerusalem on fire”, the newspaper Yeni Akit attributes the action of a group setting a mosque on fire to Jewish identity. Negative sentiments about Jews are fomented by associating Jewish identity with anti-Islam and crime.

In the article published in Milat with the title “Greeks tormented refugees”, the actions of Greek officials are attributed to Greek identity. Enmity towards Greeks is fomented by associating the identity with crime.

In the article published in Gaziantep Sabah with the title “Syrians stripped people of their jobs”, Syrians are targeted and portrayed as enemies with the suggestion that Syrians are the cause of unemployment.


1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
