The purpose of The Center of Excellence for Gender and Women’s Studies, formerly known as Gender Forum, is to gather all the Sabancı University members who are interested in gender and women’s studies under an umbrella organisation for collaboration, networking and research opportunities. The Center intends not only to promote the widespread recognition and increased effectiveness of existing research and activities, but also to allow interdisciplinary collaboration, as well as the initiation and support of new projects in the gender and women’s studies fields.

The Gender and Women’s Studies Center, shortly known as SU Gender, which was founded in March 2010 and has been awarded the status of center of excellence in April 2015, is open to all Sabancı University academic and administrative employees, students, and alumni. Since its establishment, the interdisciplinary and flexible structure of SU Gender that is supported by different faculties and programs of Sabancı University has enabled the realisation of new and diverse projects, both academic and non-academic, including community outreach and awareness-raising programs.

SU Gender has also provided institutional support for various efforts against discrimination and gender inequality and enabled their implementation. It has established itself as a center of research, project development, and community involvement, open to innovative ideas and willing to collaborate and form partnerships with international and national institutions. Since 2010, SU Gender has organised a number of conferences, ranging from women photographers to gendered memories of war, and conducted original awareness and outreach projects with high school teachers, white- and blue-collar workers, business executives, and university students.
